Around 9:45 p.m. on Oct. 29, Grande Prairie RCMP received a call about a person who was believed to be impersonating a police officer.
The caller told RCMP that after turning westbound onto 116 Avenue off of 92 Street, an older model white Ford Explorer started flashing red and blue LED lights on the dashboard of the vehicle. The driver pulled over on the side of the road when an man allegedly approached the driver side of the SUV and told the driver it was a joke, RCMP said in a Saturday news release.
The driver reportedly drove away and the suspect followed for a short time before turning northbound on Lakeland Drive.
RCMP initially asked for the public’s help to identify the suspect who was described to have a dark complexion, with a tall athletic build, between 18 and 20 years old and wearing a short sleeve uniform with a police badge on a gold chain.
Mounties said thanks to information received from the public, they were able to further the investigation and locate the vehicle and arrest the suspect.
One man is facing one count of personating a peace officer. Police did not release the man’s name Saturday. RCMP said he was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on Nov. 24.
