Alberta reported 1,521 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, the highest daily case count so far this year.
The last time daily COVID-19 case numbers were this high was on Dec. 16, when 1,587 cases were detected.
Another 674 more cases of variants of concern were identified in the province, all of which were the B.1.1.7 variant first identified in the United Kingdom.
Of the 13,059 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta, 5,937 or approximately 45 per cent, are variants of concern.
Another 15,611 tests were completed over the last 24 hours, for an approximate positivity rate of 9.7 per cent.
There are 333 people in hospital with COVID-19, a decrease of seven from Thursday. Of those, 83 are in intensive care units, which remains unchanged.
Two more deaths were reported, bringing the provincial death toll to 2,007.
