The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) have arrested two people and charges are pending after a traffic stop near Wainwright earlier this month resulted in the seizure of 20-kilograms of methamphetamine that were stashed in a hidden vehicle compartment.
Officers initiated the traffic stop on April 9 after information from the Winnipeg Police Service alerted police that the vehicle was transporting a shipment of drugs from Winnipeg to Edmonton, said ALERT in a news release.

ALERT says the street value of the methamphetamine seized is about $800,000.
After the traffic stop, Edmonton police searched a residence in Edmonton and seized 20,500 grams of methamphetamine, 3,100 grams of cocaine, 700 grams of cocaine buffing agent, 23 grams of fentanyl, a prohibited handgun with a suppressor, loaded shotgun, counterfeit money and just $31,000 in cash.
“Organized crime doesn’t operate within the confines of borders,” said Insp. Angela Kemp in the release.
“It is a sophisticated enterprise that spans provinces and jurisdictions. We are grateful for the help from our policing partners in Saskatchewan and Manitoba to keep this large quantity of drugs from being circulated in Edmonton.”
The investigation remains ongoing and the firearms have been submitted for analysis and ballistics testing.
Wainwright is roughly 200 km southeast of Edmonton.
