Arrest made in Albania in connection with 2019 Edmonton homicide

City police had to go all the way to Albania to bring in a suspect in connection to a 2019 homicide.

The 21-year-old suspect was arrested by Albanian police at a border crossing in the country on Aug. 8. after being the subject of an Interpol “red notice” last February. He was ordered to be extradited to Canada and city homicide detectives took custody of him Thursday in Tirana, Albania

Artin Korca is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Sept. 27.

He is facing a second-degree murder charge in connection to the death of Gearárd Wright, 20, in 2019.

Wright, who grew up in Edmonton, died from stab wounds suffered during an altercation outside an apartment building near 24 Avenue and 104 Street around 1:50 a.m. on Jan. 20, 2019.

A “red notice” is a request to law enforcement around the world to locate and arrest a person pending extradition, surrender or another legal action.

EPS is thanking all of its partners who assisted in Korca’s arrest — Alberta Justice, Interpol, International Assistance Group – Department of Justice, RCMP Liaison Officers assigned to European posts, RCMP – Albanian speaking member from London Ont. detatchment, the CBSA and Peel Regional (Pearson Airport).
