Alberta’s top doctor is slated to give an update on COVID-19 Thursday afternoon.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw will speak at 3:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, the province reported 410 new cases of COVID-19 – nearly doubling the number of new cases from the previous day – after completing 8,315 tests for a positivity rate of 4.9 per cent.

However, active cases and hospitalizations continue to fall in the province. As of Wednesday, there were 6,305 active cases, a decrease of 466 from Tuesday, and 435 people hospitalized with the virus, three fewer than the day before. Patients in intensive care dropped from 127 to 122.

As of Tuesday, 63.4 per cent of Albertans had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

This week, the province announced every Albertan will be able to book a second dose appointment by the end of June.

Those who received a first dose in March can now book second doses online through the AHS booking tool, or by calling 811 or participating pharmacies.

Booking will open for those who got first doses in April on June 14, and in May on June 28.

The province expects to lift all COVID-19 restrictions by the end of June or early July, two weeks after 70 per cent of Albertans 12 and older have received one dose of the vaccine.
