Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw will provide an update on the province’s COVID-19 situation at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
Restrictions on some Alberta businesses could be lifted as early as today but Hinshaw has said that decision will be based off of trends in the province’s leading indicators, including daily case counts, hospitalizations and the province’s positivity rate and R value.
Alberta’s website shows Step 2 of the reopening phase could see restrictions lifted around retail stores, banquet halls, community halls, conference centres, hotels and indoor fitness. Currently, indoor fitness is allowed in one-on-one sessions with professional, paid or certified coaches and trainers.
Hinshaw has said if a decision is made on Monday to lift some restrictions, it is possible they could be eased the same day.
The afternoon news conference will be the first in-person update from Hinshaw since Tuesday last week. Updates involving case numbers have been provided online through social media.
On Sunday, Alberta reported 301 new cases of COVID-19, with 4,584 active cases across the province. Three more deaths were reported Sunday, bringing the provincial death toll to 1,886. The total number of COVID-19 variant cases identified in the province now stands at 430. There are currently 250 people hospitalized with COVID-19, well below the threshold of 450 to begin Step 2 of the province’s reopening plan.
Through end-of-day Saturday, Alberta has administered 227,678 doses of COVID-19 vaccine for 5,148.9 doses per 100,000 people.
