Another record-breaking number of the highly-contagious COVID-19 variant cases was reported in Alberta on Tuesday, including two more of the Brazilian strain.
Nearly all of the 197 new variant cases were the U.K. strain (B.1.1.7), apart from two more of the Brazilian (P.1) variant found in Calgary, bringing the province to a total of four P1 cases. The last record was set Sunday with 184.
The province reported 465 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday and hospitalizations have risen to 290, an increase of 10. There are 6,231 active cases of which 1,378 are in the Edmonton Zone.
Three more people have died from COVID-19 including a man in his 90s and a woman in her 80s in the Edmonton Zone linked to the outbreak at Churchill Manor, and a man in his 80s linked to an outbreak at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.
