Dr. Deena Hinshaw to provide update on COVID-19 in Alberta

Alberta’s top doctor will give an update on COVID-19 in the province Tuesday afternoon.

The 3:30 p.m. media availability will be Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw’s first appearance since Thursday.

On Monday, hospitalizations from COVID-19 continued to rise as the province reported 679 new cases of variants of concern.

Alberta’s bed capacity for COVID-19 patients is currently at 86 per cent, with 390 Albertans in hospital as a result of the virus including 90 in intensive care. Alberta Health Services spokesman Kerry Williamson said in an email the province has adequate hospital capacity with the ability to increase it as needed.

Alberta reported 1,136 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, with variants of concern accounting for 51.3 per cent of total active cases.

The dominant variant strain in Alberta is B.1.1.7, which was first identified in the United Kingdom.
