The driver of an overturned street sweeper was rescued off the ice of the North Saskatchewan River Wednesday morning.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services received a call from Edmonton police just after 8:30 a.m. with a report that a vehicle had been involved in an accident and was overturned on its side on the ice of the river.

Eight fire crews arrived on scene, four of which contained rapid deployment crafts for water rescues, spokeswoman Brittany Lewchuk said.

The driver was extricated from the street sweeper and assessed at the scene by emergency medical services as a precaution.
