Firefighters were called during the early hours of the morning Friday to combat a blaze at an abandoned home in central Edmonton.

Five fire crews responded to calls of heavy smoke and flames at an abandoned home near 98 Street and 108 Avenue at 3:32 a.m., said Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) spokeswoman Brittany Lewchuk. The first crew arrived on scene at 3:37 a.m. and two additional crews were called in to help fight the fire, Lewchuk said.

The fire was brought under control by 4:58 a.m. and was contained to the one home, however residents in neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution, Lewchuk said. No injuries were reported.

Crews and investigators remained on scene Friday morning to douse hot spots and asses damages. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
