The Edmonton Oilers drafted with their third round pick, 76th overall, to San Hose for the 100th and 126th picks.

At the time, players like Zion Nybeck, Martin Chromiak, William Villeneuve, Daniil Gushchin, Anton Johannesson, Alexander Pashin, Sean Farrell, Justin Sourdif, all ranked in the Top 50 by public draft experts were still available.

According to work done by Brad McPherson of the Blue Bullet Report, the average value of the 76th pick in a draft is 2.55 career value points. The value of the 100 pick is 1.48, with the 126th pick worth 0.91. Total it up, and the Sharks got 2.55 career value in the trade, while the Oilers got 2.38, so the deal was close in average value.

Reaction to the move was mixed:

I don’t understand passing on a good player so you can get two lesser players at this point in the draft. Sorry.

Don’t mind this at all for Edmonton. They’re not moving too far back and get two picks coming up here.

I could see Oilers potentially go after Savoie and Benning in the 4th round.

I’m betting the #Oilers wanted D Jeremie Poirier. When he dropped off the board, Holland decided to recoup a pick instead.

This increases Edmonton’s pick count to five in the 2020 Draft. The last time they had a similar pick distribution was 2015, where the Oilers picked first overall and then not until the fourth round; they selected Caleb Jones with that pick and then Ethan Bear in the 5th round.

If they didn’t like anyone enough to pick there, I wonder why they didn’t let CAL have the pick this year?… And if you want more picks, why not trade down from 14? They must have been really sold on holloway, I think there was still a pretty decent chance you land holloway a few picks later, and if not seems like there were a number of other players in the range?

In other news, the Oilers made it official in deciding not to qualify Andreas Athanasiou and Matt Benning
