At about 2:35 a.m., an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a black 2014 Ford Focus in the area of Whitemud Drive westbound and 91 Street. Police said in a news release the registered owner of the vehicle was listed as a suspended driver.

However, police said the driver of the Ford did not stop for police and fled at a high rate of speed, travelling west on Whitemud Drive and exiting the freeway at the Calgary Trail southbound off-ramp. The police vehicle did not pursue.

The Ford was found in the area of the off ramp at Calgary Trail southbound and Whitemud Drive, where it had reportedly lost control and struck a light pole.

One passenger, a 23-year-old woman, was transported to hospital by emergency medical services with life-threatening injuries. The woman driving the Ford and a second passenger, a 31-year-old man, both died at the scene.

Edmonton police continue to investigate the collision.
