Edmonton police will officially move into the new northwest campus on March 1, following construction delays.

Following a two-year delay and a new roof that was completed in December after numerous leaks were found, the $119.7-million building is finally ready to open.

“The new Northwest Campus gives us more opportunities to improve public and officer safety,” said Edmonton police Chief Dale McFee in a news release.

“While we can respond more effectively to crime in northwest Edmonton, we can also give our newest officers additional opportunities to train in an integrated community policing environment.  By combining our business areas, from training to the frontline, we can create new synergies between staff and have a more comprehensive approach to the service we provide to the public.”

The new building, located at 18440 127 Street in the Goodridge Corners neighbourhood, is based on a “hub model” with shared amenities with more than 250 employees on site.

Since 2005, the service has used a former Canadian Armed Forces building in Griesbach as a training facility. With the new campus, recruit training and professional development are under one roof.

A detainee care facility will also be in the building, and police say it is designed for increased safety and security and has additional cells to prevent overcrowding, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During construction of the new campus, northwest division officers had been working out of leased spaces.

Police say the facility will open March 1 without interruption of service to the community and the public will be able to access the new front counter at the station for in-person reporting.
