When it gets this hot out I try and think of things that are cool, like fans or a bucket full of ice to put my feet in or a cold wet towel to put on the back of my neck or movies that have ice in them so that I am subconsciously thinking of being cold.

Which brings me to the fact that I was thinking about figure skating movies, which I’ll admit isn’t like a huge genre with a ton of titles like football, basketball or even hockey movies.

In 1992 we got a little film starring D.B. Sweeney and Moria Kelly called The Cutting Edge. A story about two people who individually had made it to the Olympics but failed to achieve any medals, Sweeney being a hockey player and Kelly a pairs figure skater. Fast forward a few years and they team up as a figure skating pair and have to try to work together to win the gold.

From learning about the toe pick to how to shoot a hockey puck it’s a classic story of two people getting over their own perceived differences of each other in order to succeed.

It has all the romantic movie beats that you would expect but it’s very well acted and that’s really what makes the movie work so well. You believe in these two and you want them to succeed. I’m not going to spoil any more than that.
