Today marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The federal government created the day to honour the children forced to attend government-funded residential schools. Indigenous children, forced to attend, suffered emotional, physical and sexual abuse. Many of these children died in these schools. The recent discovery of unmarked graves near the grounds of these former schools has sparked renewed outrage over the atrocities suffered in the residential school system.
September 30 has also become known as Orange Shirt Day. On the day six-year-old Phyllis Webstad was taken from her home to attend her first day of residential school she wore a brand new orange shirt. That shirt was taken from her upon her arrival.
