A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.

On a hot day like today, there really is no other choice, in my opinion, than a well chilled white. Something light, crisp, fruity with a refreshing level of acidity. That leaves the door wide open to many options. You could choose from Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, or maybe even a more aromatic variety like Gewurztraminer. One of my favourite choices is an Albariño from Spain.

This grape, also known as Alvarinho or Vinho Verde in Portugal, is thick-skinned, naturally high in acidity and produces refreshing wines. Flavours of citrus and stone fruits. Think lemon zest, grapefruit, honeydew melon and some apricot. Albariño is typically made in a fresh unoaked style. Although there are rich oaked versions that take on aromas of brioche.  What makes this grape stand out comes from the region where it’s grown. This grape is grown on the northeastern coast of Spain. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean gives the wines a saline quality.

This is a wine sings with white meats, fish and seafood. Which are all great choices on such a warm day. Honestly, close your eyes and imagine the sea breeze while you sip on this refreshing wine and nibble on some tapas. When you open your eyes again you’ll realize you are still at home but enjoying one of the nicest days we’ve had this year.
