One person was taken to hospital in critical condition and four others were transported for precautionary measures after a home caught on fire in southeast Edmonton Wednesday evening.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) received calls about the blaze at 4:11 p.m. and arrived three minutes later to a fully involved fire at a detached home near 18 Avenue and 35 Street. EFRS spokeswoman Adriana Amelio said there were seven crews on scene shortly and the fire was declared under control at 5:01 p.m.

“We have investigators on scene right now,” Amelio said shortly after 5:30 p.m. “There aren’t a ton of details about damage inside the house but it is quite extensive and we do believe it started on the main floor.”

Amelio said that while fire was fully involved when crews arrived, weather and other external factors did not make it difficult to get under control. She said crews had not yet declared the fire out as they were working to ensure all hot spots had been fully extinguished.
