Former Edmonton Progressive Conservative MLA and Catholic school trustee Janice Sarich has died.

In a tweet Saturday evening, Premier Jason Kenney said he was terribly saddened by the death of his good friend.

“Janice passed away last night after receiving a cancer diagnosis just three weeks ago,” Kenney said. “She was a wonderful, giving and compassionate woman dedicated to her community, serving as both a Catholic school trustee (and) MLA.”

Sarich first entered politics in 2001 when she ran for a trustee seat with the Edmonton Catholic School District. She was elected for two terms before running for the PCs in the 2008 provincial election in the riding of Edmonton-Decore. She was appointed to cabinet by former premier Ed Stelmach with the role as parliamentary assistant to then education minister Dave Hancock and served in that position until 2011.

In the 2015 election, Sarich was defeated by Chris Nielsen of the Alberta NDP.

She had two education degrees and was a business consultant before turning to politics. In her past, she was also involved with a number of organizations including the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, Catholic Social Services and Public Interest Alberta’s democracy task force.

Sarich was 62.
