The elected officials, along with Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw and president of Alberta Health Services Dr. Verna Yiu, are slated to appear at 3:30 p.m.
The appearance comes on the same day the Edmonton Public School Board called a special meeting in which it voted to advocate for the province to implement a firebreak, including a closure of schools and switch to online learning for a minimum of 2 weeks.
At the same meeting the board agreed it would push for purchasing better air filtration systems for ventilation in schools and call on the province to share information on COVID-19 positive cases, reinstate contact tracing and quarantining of close contacts of positive cases.
On Monday Alberta reported 4,037 new COVID-19 cases and 21 more deaths over the previous three days.
The province has faced soaring COVID-19 numbers during the fourth wave of the pandemic leading to record-high ICU cases and the cancellation of thousands of surgeries due to a lack of available resources.
The Canadian Armed Forces have been called in to help. Resources are also coming from New Brunswick and the Red Cross.
