One person was taken to hospital after emergency crews responded to a fire at a four-storey apartment building in north Edmonton Wednesday evening.
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokesman Matt Pretty said crews were called to the fire near 129 Avenue and 64 Street at 5:54 p.m. and arrived four minutes later where they saw smoke coming from a second-floor apartment. A total of nine units responded and declared the blaze under control at 6:47 p.m.
One individual was taken to hospital by EMS in unknown condition. Pretty said EFRS used a ladder truck to assist with getting people out of the third and fourth floors of the building.
Pretty said it is believed a couch had initially caught on fire. There is no estimate on damages.
There were close to a dozen emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, fire investigators and EMS units, on scene shortly before 8 p.m. as residents remained outside, waiting to return to their apartments.
Tammy Delorey and Amanda Veinot said they had both been looked at by EMS crews for smoke inhalation and were waiting to return home. Standing outside in shorts and wrapped in a blanket, Delorey said she was worried for her cats that were still inside. She said the stairwell she used to exit the building was filled with thick, black smoke.
“There was a lot of smoke, I nearly tripped coming down the stairs,” said Delorey who lives on the third floor. “It was that thick.”
