RCMP said Sunday they were alerted around 4:15 p.m. that a small plane had crashed in a field between Wetaskiwin Regional Airport and a nearby Walmart. The pilot appeared to be the lone occupant and was taken by STARS air ambulance to an Edmonton hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters and paramedics also attended.
“The plane appears to have had trouble immediately after takeoff and the pilot tried to bring it down as safety as possible,” said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Shawn French.
French did not have the pilot’s name or further details about the crash.
The cause is still under investigation.
Wetaskiwin is about 72 kilometres south of Edmonton.
