Crews continued their search Monday near where police said a 20-year-old man “became in distress” then didn’t resurface while swimming near a boat. Divers and a police boat were brought in Sunday after an unsuccessful 10-hour search the day previous, and a search by police and firefighters along the shoreline Friday.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Deanna Fontaine said the same resources were brought back Monday and they plan to continue Tuesday if the man isn’t found.

Police are aware of rumours around the circumstances of the man’s disappearance, but Fontaine says there’s no proof to support any of them.

“There’s nothing more to this than a sad, unfortunate, situation,” she said in an interview. “There’s no reason for us to believe any of this is criminal.”

There’s been a rise in people going missing in bodies of water across Alberta this season. RCMP have reported 17 drownings in their jurisdiction as of July 17.

Wabamun Lake is located about 69 kilometres west of Edmonton.
