In celebration of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi’s 210th birthday (think of the poor cake under those candles!) the Alberta Symphony orchestra is presenting a night of operatic music boldly titled Verdi-ssimo Tuesday.

“The superlative title well summarizes a festive night entirely dedicated to Verdi’s works,” explains ASO’s musical director Emilio De Mercato, “with a vast selection from his most powerful and touching arias, duets and ensembles — one above all, Libiamo from La Traviata.

“On this particular occasion,” he explains, “I have created an original opera-format recital program divided into one overture and three acts to give our audience the same feeling when attending opera.”

De Mercato will start by solo performing Franz Liszt’s Concert Paraphrase on Verdi’s Rigoletto.

“And then I will be the ‘orchestra’ on the piano,” he notes, “as I accompany the extraordinary Alberta-based opera singers, sopranos Cara Lianne McLeod, Helen Hassinger, Nansee Hughes, mezzo-soprano Barbara King, tenor Andrea Pinna and baritone Bertrand Malo.”

Besides the aforementioned operas, selections will touch on Aida, Nabucco and La forza del destino over its special three-act program.

The event is sponsored by the local district of National Congress of Italian-Canadians, and more information about the program, as well as $40 tickets for the concert and refreshments to follow, are at albertasymphony.com.

Happy birthday, Verdi — you sound terrific for your age!
