Mashing up electro beats with traditional sounds of their Indigenous roots is nothing new for The Halluci Nation. Tim “2oolman” Hill and Ehren “Bear Witness” Thomas began doing this as A Tribe Called Red, the electronic group formed in Ottawa in 2007 with DJ Jon Deck and Dan “DJ Shub” General.

A Tribe Called Red has won three Juno awards, including Group of the Year in 2018, and used its platform on stage and off for social activism, speaking out on issues such as environmental and human rights protections.

The final album as ATRC was 2016’s We Are The Halluci Nation, named as a tribute to the Native American author and activist John Trudell who died the year prior. As other members bowed out of the project for personal reasons, Hill and Thomas carried on and formally changed the powwow-step project’s name to The Halluci Nation in 2021. That same year, the duo released Another Saturday Night, the first album under the new moniker.

Fantastic energy live, the duo is playing Edmonton’s Union Hall Thursday night with guests. Doors are at 7 p.m. and there are still tickets available for $35 plus service fees.
