Three to See Friday: Gisa Mayer's mountains, Brad Necyk's Birth of the World

Mountains in Motion: “Mountains are a big part of my life,” says painter Gisa Mayer of her new show at Bugera Matheson on 124th. “I grew up in the Alps and now the Rockies occupy my thoughts and paintings along with them. Long gentle slopes, sharp rocky faces, lakes nestled between peaks, more shades of impossibly beautiful colours than you can ever hope to mix on your palette. All this is also a refuge, a retreat into beauty and splendour where you leave everything else behind.” Jeff Sylvester also debuts at the gallery with his work From Up Above, focusing on more urban landscapes.

The Birth of the World: Edmonton’s Brad Necyk and artist/musician Gary James Joynes join forces on a new film that’s part of online exhibition Embodiment 2, presented by Montreal dance company Van Grimde Corps Secrets. The troupe has also made a beautiful sci-fi film and web series with DAVAI called EVE 2050 which you may have seen at the Dyscorpa show in 2019, and Necyk and Joynes’ work The Birth of the World is a response to some of its research and ideas on the way our very bodies are changing moving into the future. The film “begins somewhere in the future,” explains Necyk. “Time passes and passes as we witness the birth of a new world. Two survivors connect, attempt to heal themselves, alone in this new world.”
