Agent Crystalline: In June I wrote about a couple Edmonton public art pieces earning a spot in the top 100, runners-up of a juried international art and design competition known as the CODAawards. Now, one of them has won top prize in the Institutional category. Commissioned by the Edmonton Arts Council, Agent Crystalline Pavilion by New York City artist Marc Fornes and THEVERYMANY is a sprawling, sculptural entryway to the Edmonton Police Service Northwest Campus at 127 St. north of Anthony Henday Drive in Goodridge Corners. Most people in town have never seen the work in person, but a safer rising-pandemic-numbers activity could hardly be mentioned — so please feel free to go have a look and yet another Edmonton public artwork that’s gotten international attention.

Chairman cassette release: “The future of punk is future punk!” the new saying goes, and the beloved Aviary in the Mice District is set to show you what that’s all about. Delightfully old school, actually, with a definite glam vibe, the rascals in Chairman bill themselves as a “rock band from the year 2077” sent back in time to warn us. Whatever, they rule and occasionally even sing in Polish. Earl Donald and Laundry Week are also on the bill, so get as wild as you safely can in this insane reality we now live in.

Heathers (1988): One of the greats that kind of pre-defined the ’90s, Veronica (Winona Ryder) is part of the most popular clique at her high school, but she disapproves of the other girls’ cruel behaviour. When Veronica and her new beau, J.D. (Christian Slater) confront clique-leader Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), they accidentally poison her and make it appear a suicide. Don’t miss this dark Michael Lehmann milestone on the silver screen.
