The Fringe That Almost Wasn’t (2021): Those of you missing Senator Paula Simons’ voice in the paper since she transferred into the political realm would do well to check out her terrific little lookback doc about the 2021 Fringe. Her great interviews include the minds behind Chanzo, which I was lucky enough to review; pêhonân’s venue manager Josh Languedoc; and veteran actor and pure quote machine Divina Stewart, who talks about doing a one-woman show during the weird pandemic reality. I love Simons’ eager arts advocacy here, hopping around to La Cité Francophone and Fort Edmonton, pushing the city in front of national eyes — and it’s sweet this document exists as a time capsule of hope during an otherwise pretty fraught Alberta summer.

Uniquely Albertan: The Fringe that Almost Wasnt

The Edmonton Fringe, Canada’s largest theatre festival, marked its 40th edition this year, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. With so many health and safety challenges to overcome, Fringe producers and artists worked to create a smaller, stripped-down, festival, following strict masking and social distancing rules, the better to bring live theatre back to Edmonton. Yet despite the challenges that artists faced, it was also a year of creative risks and new beginnings for the festival . Senator Paula Simons, a long-time Fringe fan and participant went backstage to meet some of the Fringe creators, and to share their stories on how they fringed in 2021. This video is part of an ongoing video series featuring uniquely Albertan activities, events, people, and much more.

Simon & Garfunkel: A Musical Celebration: Speaking of, well, one Simon anyway, Musicians Michael Sicoly and Mick Dalla-Vee — Randy Bachman’s bass player at times — recreate the legendary vibe of America’s most famous folk-rock duo. The concert features classics like The Sound of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, The Boxer and Bridge Over Troubled Water, as well as songs from the performers’ solo careers.

Calgary International Film Fest: While normally it’d be worth it to drive on down to Calgary for its very awesome global film festival, you can buy tickets to stream this year for many of its 175 or so films through eventlive.org. After you unlock a film, you’ll have two days to finish — and you can rewatch for no extra charge. Films will be available online at 9 a.m. the first day of its watch window.
