Free Comic Book Day: We sometimes forget the source of so much of our on-screen culture comes from print media, comic books specifically. Around town Saturday at various shops like Variant Edition, Wonderland Games and Warp 2 (call your favourite local to confirm) Free Comic Book Day is just what it sounds like, a chance to come nab a bunch of free reading material. The annual event was pushed up from May due to you know what, so whether your thing is Archie, Star Wars or, you know, good old superheroes like Spider-Man and the Tick, there’s definitely something for you here.

Details: At comic stores around town all Saturday, no charge
Canadian printmakers in Poland: This virtual gallery show is truly at the video-game, Google Maps level as you move around the Gallery of Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. The show is called ProTO-type(s): Experimental Contemporary Canadian Printmaking, and among its 21 Canadian artists features Alberta artists Derek Besant, Sean Caulfield, John Dean, Karen Dugas, Alexandra Haeseker, Bernd Hildebrandt, Liz Ingram, Walter Jule and Jewel Shaw. Really worth a look, and you can see the fine details down to the curved paper hanging on the walls.

Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain (2021): Morgan Neville’s documentary premiered at Tribeca and follows the life and times of the late celebrity chef and world-traveller, Anthony Bourdain. Some people were upset the film used artificial intelligence technology to reproduce Bourdain’s voice, but otherwise received critical acclaim and, let’s face it, any chance to spend time with this amazing and complicated figure is a learning experience, and the magnificent David Chang is all over it if you need just a little more incentive.
