Static Plush Wire: Experimental musician and wearer of striped shirts Matthew Cardinal and director Laura La France are the featured artists in the second episode of Live From the Garneau — Metro Cinema’s most excellent creative series which probably wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the planetary plague. Cardinal is surrounded by his gear up on a rug on the stage in the big old theatre with a flickering TV and a plastic owl, replicating the slow and steady process of making dreamy ambient music he did so wonderfully on his album Asterisms. Over this, La France layers images of flowers and trees Cardinal’s taken, making for a spooky-pretty, slo-mo journey with an upbeat twist befitting our current circumstances — save this one for a moment alone at night, and for sure check out his album and, soon enough, live performances.

FAVA Fest drive-in: FAVA has come up with a smart way to do its annual awards ceremony with a 1950s drive-in movie twist. Mile Zero Dance is also doing a drive-in screening of their one-hour Departures, a series of international dance shorts curated by Gerry Morita and Shawn Tse. Featuring films from Canada, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Brazil, Switzerland, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Cuba and the U.S., moving bodies are added to that perfect fusion of science and art: motion pictures.
