Connor McDavid did it, achieving what most hockey observers felt was impossible in this truncated season, scoring 100 points.

It took him just 53 out of 56 games.

Not surprisingly, Twitter exploded with admiration, excitement and the odd comment critique, including a Pittsburgh hockey writer suggesting that Sidney Crosby is the NHL’s best choice for MVP this season.

100 in 53. We are blessed, #Oilers fans. We are blessed.

Oilers fan Adam @OilersAdam
This week the Oilers clinched a playoff spot & home ice advantage for the first round, vaccines are rolling out in Alberta, Draisaitl recorded his 500th point & McDavid hit 100 points. What a time to be alive, folks.

Carlo Colaiacovo, co-host of a TSN1050 sports radio show in Toronto
Saying Connor McDavid hit 100pts in 53 games because he played in the weakest division in hockey is the most ridiculous thing you can say about his record setting season. You ever think how many points he’d get playing in the normal West division against the teams shown below?

Oilers fan Jason Adams
To put McDavid’s insanity into perspective:

Leon Draisaitl’s current 122 point pace over 82 games would have won or tied for the Art Ross trophy in 20 of the last 25 seasons (couple lockouts in there)

McDavid‘s 82 game pace? 155 points.

Edmonton hockey fan McJenny @ginny_jenny
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO CONNOR MCDAVID’S MOM!!

Pittsburgh hockey writer Rob Rossi of The Athletic

McDavid will win Hart. He’s the best player. Hart isn’t for best player. Or top scorer. If you don’t agree that best player and/or top scorer shouldn’t win Hart every season, change the criteria… All games were in division. Every division has bad teams. Some are top heavy. Others are deeper. But with four divisions and all games within each division, finishing first matters more than most seasons… Those that follow know I make this case about Hart Trophy every season. This time it just happens to be my opinion that Crosby was most valuable to a division-wining team. Doesn’t mean I’m anti-McDavid. But I would, were I to vote, probably have Matthews over him from North.

Lots of ways to look at this. How about this one. McDavid was on the ice for 120 out of the Oilers 174 goals. Crosby was on for 85 out of the Pens 196 goals. Seems pretty clear which team would suffer more without their top guy.

Patrick Bacon of Top Down Hockey in California (in response to Rossi)
First and foremost, this is an awful take. If anybody besides McDavid deserves the Hart, it’s definitely Matthews, and Matthews definitely doesn’t deserve the Hart. But what I hate even more is the idea that somebody can only disagree because of “anti-Penguins bias.” If anybody immediately says “anybody who disagrees with me only disagrees because they hate the thing I am supporting!” right after they state their opinion, it’s probably a bad take that they can’t support with a real argument; also probably not worth your time.

Hockey YouTuber Steve “Dangle” Glynn (in response to Rossi)
Mitch Marner has 67 points in 54 games. He’s third in NHL scoring. Connor McDavid has more assists than Marner has points.
Marner’s pace over 82 games is 102 points, which would be the 4th-most productive Leafs season ever. McDavid has 100 points and a 155 point pace.
Mutant.

NHL network’s Jamie Hersch in New York
Here’s a fun fact: Connor McDavid has more games with 3+ points this season (18) than games with 0 points (11). 😲

Ottawa writer James Wood
McDavid should jump to the KHL next year and win rookie of the year.

Great, Canucks will be reminded of this season every time McDavid’s 100th point is shown.

Edmonton sports commentator Mark Spector of Sportsnet
What a performance by McDavid, that true superstar who recognizes the occasion, and is talented enough to deliver.
I sure wish there were 18,500 fans in this place to enjoy this. It’s a crime that a season this great gets played in front of only empty seats. Bravo.

NHL hockey analyst Mike Johnson
100 points for McDavid is an incredible accomplishment in any year, let alone 53 games. We know he’s great, but this night, like a Gretzky with 5 to get 50 in 39, he is on another level. One of the best games I can remember

Boston sports commentator Pete Blackburn of Twitch TV
The people trying to cartwheel their way out of Connor McDavid being the most valuable player in hockey should never get to work in hockey again

Edmonton hockey commentator Robin Brownlee
The real greatness in Connor McDavid is that he’ll be happy about not having to talk about chasing 100 points after tonight. Eyes on a bigger prize. That’s how the truly great ones tick.

ESPN staff writer Bill Barnwell
In terms of how much better he is than his competition, think you could make a pretty reasonable case Connor McDavid is the best male athlete in the world right now.

Oilers fan Ryan @IAmByks
Years from now we’ll tell tales of watching Connor McDavid get 100 points in 53 games in a pandemic while also keeping one eye on the sky for a falling Chinese rocket

Coolt. Connor McDavid gjorde precis sin 100:e poäng den här säsongen. I 53:e matchen. Vilken mäktig prestation!

Toronto sports commentator Sid Seixeiro of Breakfast Television
Connor McDavid is a bad man.

Athletic writer Jesse Granger of Las Vegas
Time to create a league above the NHL for McDavid to graduate to. He’s too good for this level, stunting his development.

Oilers fan nrXic
In 10 years some dude is going to claim to have seen McDavid’s score his 100th point from front row seats and people will believe him.

McDavid’s achievement this season is the best campaign an NHL forward has had since, at a minimum, Mario-in-his-prime.
It’s been an absolute pleasure to watch. Personally, I’ve never seen anything to match.
Ignore the folks who can’t enjoy it. They’re only robbing themselves.

Shoutout to my mom for having me at a time where I could enjoy Wayne Gretzky and Connor McDavid

Happy Mother’s Day.
My Mom, Mary, would like you to know that Connor McDavid has factored in 77% of Oiler goals (10-26-36 out of 47) over the last 14 games. 77%. For a month. Carry on.

Edmonton Journal sports columnist Terry Jones
Just finished my column. And it’s definitely at this moment a columnist that goes back to the beginning of the WHA should write a paragraph about the extent I feel blessed and privileged to be able to cover both Wayne Gretzky and Connor McDavid in the prime of their careers.

Sportsnet commentator Eric Engels in Montreal
Imagine not giving McDavid your first-place Hart vote? Should be unanimous, IMO.
