Two children died in a fire at a home near Buck Lake Wednesday morning, Breton RCMP said in a news release Friday afternoon.

Mounties with the crime reduction unit were nearby on another matter when they found a house on fire on Township Road 465 near Range Road 640 and called the fire department.

Police say they were told two children were trapped inside and tried to rescue them, but couldn’t because of the extent of the fire. A one-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl, both from Drayton Valley, were found after the fire was extinguished and the home searched.

Alberta RCMP’s major crimes, forensic investigation, and serious crimes sections are investigating, along with a fire investigator.

A report from the fire investigator hasn’t been completed.
