The two-term Ward 1 councillor showed a significant lead over his two opponents with some polls still to be counted Monday night. Challengers Dave Olivier and Steve Weston trailed the incumbent by a wide margin, with Weston coming in last place.

First elected in 2013, Knack leaned on his past council experience and record to appeal to voters this election, highlighting past platform points like lobbying for the LRT west expansion, alley renewal and seniors’ support programs. He voiced support for infrastructure investment in newer communities and renewing older ones.

Transit, infill housing, spending and “core services” were key issues in this race . Knack’s challengers took aim at council’s perceived overspending, and complaints about redevelopment in older neighbourhoods, and dissatisfaction with the LRT expansion as points of contention.

In an earlier interview, Knack said he supported a tax freeze for 2022 followed by future raises tied to inflation.
