Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ rumoured new deal hit the Internet. Twitter exploded. Here are some of the top commments:

Oilers blogger Sean Patrick Ryan @TheOilKnight
Love the salary amount, don’t love the term but I’m not one of those to complain about years 6-8 in year 1 now.

What’s done is done, welcome back Nuge!

YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A STEAL BABY

Jonathan Willis @JonathanWillis, The Athletic writer
An 8-year deal for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at a $5.125MM AAV (as per @TSNRyanRishaug) is a good deal for everyone.
– The Oilers get a good player at a great price
– RNH gets maximum term and control via NMC
– The fans get to see a long-time favourite stay in the city
Nugent-Hopkins would have received more money per year if he’d gone to market. Fans are always clamoring for players to take hometown discounts – RNH got term and control but he certainly left money on the table.

Wow, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is staying with the #Oilers. $5.125 M AAV

Sportsnet columnist Mark Spector @SportsnetSpec
Oilers give more term than they would have liked, but Nugent-Hopkins takes $1M off his previous AAV.
Team couldn’t afford to lose a LW. Player wanted to stay.
This is a fair but lengthy contract that will see RNH as an Oiler for life (full no movement clause).

How good is the average player at 35? Kyle Turris reminds me a lot of Nuge in style and build and he’s only 30.for this to work out I think Nuge needs to work harder in the off-season to improve his speed, strength and shot. His agility is excellent but above attributes just avg

Our regiment’s longest serving soldier is returning to fight in our colours for the foreseeable future.
Lt. Nugent-Hopkins has regaled us with his tales of the early times and will continue to fight to bring Stanley’s chalice home. This is a good day.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is getting a NMC but Doug Armstrong couldn’t justify giving one to Alex Pietrangelo

Does this signing change your mind about the way those #stlblues negotiations were handled?

Oilers fan Murdoch Davis @murdochdavis
The money terms are good, so maybe the 8 years is OK. But no movement for all 8 likely becomes an albatross before he turns 36 (!!) just as the deal expires. But it’s RNH, there’s sentimental value and maybe he’ll play 4C late in the deal. Or wear the mascot uni 🙂

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins near deal means he’ll not only be able to go start to finish with his career here but play more games than any player in Oilers history.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins re-signs with the Oilers…Team gets a cap hit they can afford…player gets long term security…fans get a favourite player to watch.

Even strength points per 60 over the last two seasons:

Ilya Mikheyev – 1.78
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – 1.71

Analytics writer Micah Blake McCurdy @IneffectiveMath
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (8×5.1m extension with Edmonton) provides a good chunk of offence both at 5v5 and 5v4, and finishes decently. Not a liability defensively.

the nugent-hopkins deal is good. aside from the timing, ken holland did a very good job with 93

Oilers blogger Rob Soria @Oil_Drop
Eight years is a long time but at that dollar, hard not to love this deal. Clearly, RNH wanted to stay but give Holland full marks for using that to his advantage. Also, those suggesting Nugent-Hopkins isn’t worth $5M per, you know not what you speak. Great day for the Oilers!!!

Hockey podcaster Mike Cratty @Mike_Cratty
This is pretty nice value for Edmonton. I thought Nugent-Hopkins would be due for around $6M AAV he had going for him on his previous deal. Takes one of the top unrestricted free agents off the market

Flames blogger Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
Eight years is a bit lengthy, but a $5.125m AAV for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is a steal. That’s $200k less than Mikael Backlund got in Calgary.

CBC radio Dave Waddell @dave_waddell

With that deal… Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is on track to become the first major player in Oilers history to spend the entirety of his career with the team. Kind of astonishing after 40+ years
