Zach Hyman to Edmonton Oilers definitely a done deal, just a matter of timing, NHL insider says

This in from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, responding to Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer, who wondered if Zach Hyman deal was a done deal.

“I think he’s coming to Edmonton, one way or another,” Friedman said, then later in the interview game a second assure that the deal was done and Hyman was coming to Edmonton, either on an 8-year deal at about $5.0 million per, or a 7-year deal at $5.5 million per.

To get an eight-year term and the lower cap hit, the deal would have to be a sign-and-trade, with the Toronto Maple Leafs signing Hyman, then trading Hyman to the Oilers for something of value. Edmonton is said to be offering a sixth-round pick, but Friedman said the Leafs were asking for much more than that, as much as second or third round pick.

My take

1. If Edmonton’s goal is damn the torpedoes, let’s  go for it and win now, if that’s the imperative in the second half of the Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl contracts, then the Hyman singing makes sense.
